RSHE

The aims of relationships and sex education (RSHE) at The Roseland Multi Academy Trust schools are to:

  • Provide a framework in which sensitive discussions can take place.

  • Prepare students for puberty and give them an understanding of sexual development and the importance of health, hygiene and consent.

  • Help students develop feelings of self-respect, confidence and empathy.

  • Create a positive culture around issues of sexuality and relationships.

  • Teach students the correct words to describe themselves and their bodies. We encourage using accurate biological and medical terms rather than slang. This helps students talk clearly and confidently about their bodies, feelings, and any health concerns they may have.

  • And perhaps most importantly, RSHE lessons empower all students with the vital life skills to confidently navigate the real world while being safe, healthy and happy.

Below, you will find our learning journey for RSHE.  You will also see an example of one of our Year 7 lessons.

Statutory Requirements
We do not have to follow the National Curriculum but we are expected to offer all students a curriculum that is similar to the National Curriculum including requirements to teach science which would include the elements of sex education contained in the science curriculum.
In teaching RSHE, we are required by our Funding Agreement to have regard to guidance issued by the Secretary of State as outlined in Section 403 of the Education Act 1996. We must also have regard to our legal duties set out in Section 404 and 407 of the Education Act 1996 and part 6, chapter 1 of the Equality Act 2010.
The Public Sector Equality Duty as (set out in section 149 of the Equality Act 2010). This duty requires public bodies to have due regard to the need to eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations between different people when carrying out their activities 2 Our secondary schools provide RSHE to all students as per Section 34 of the Children and Social Work Act 2017.
This policy has been comprehensively revised to meet the strict legal requirements of the September 2026 Statutory Relationships, Sex, and Health Education (RSHE) guidance, tracking directly against the DfE Personal Development Inspection Framework.
At The Roseland Academy, Treviglas Academy and Falmouth School we teach RSHE as set out in this policy. Please also see our Funding Agreement and Articles of Association for further information. This policy should be read alongside:
• Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE)
• The Trust Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy
• The Behaviour Policy • The Online Safety Policy
• The Equality and Diversity Policy
