The role of a Parent Trustee Parent Trustees are elected by other parents within the Multi Academy Trust (MAT). Any parent, or carer, of a registered pupil at any of the four schools at the time of election is eligible to stand for election as a parent trustee. Parent trustees may continue to hold office until the end of their term of office (4 years) even if their child leaves the school during this time. Schools must make every reasonable effort to fill parent trustee vacancies through elections, however the MAT’s Articles of Association, do make provision for parent trustees to be appointed where the number of parents standing for election is less than the number of vacancies.
As a parent trustee you hold the unique position of having a parental viewpoint. Through the children you will have firsthand experience of the curriculum and how the school is perceived from the parental point of view. You will be able to bring this perspective to the strategic management of the schools. As a parent trustee you must not vote in a particular way because you have been pressed to do so by parents. Objectivity is essential. You are not there to promote the interests of your own children specifically or to be a spokesperson for other parents’ views. You are representative of the parent body, not a representative for them.
