Rowing
Treviglas College is very pleased to hold Newquay’s first Inter- Secondary college indoor rowing festival. Newquay has a long history of gig rowing and with that in mind and continuing the close Community links that Treviglas has built up with the gig club, the college has invested in its own rowing machines and established a club for indoor rowing.
Last year, Sean Wells, the Sports Co-ordinator for Treviglas successfully applied for a grant to set up the Newquay Community Rowing partnership. Awards for All, funded by the National Lottery, put forward £9162 to support the bid; this money will be used for the establishment of indoor rowing centres whose objectives will be twofold: to introduce the sport of indoor rowing into the local community and to encourage a broad section of our community to participate in regular physical activity.
The first rowing centre was set up in April when 8 Concept2 rowers were delivered to Treviglas College. The College has employed a well- known and experienced rowing coach, Tommy Gee, to help set up the club. In its short life the new club has been recognised regionally by the Amateur Rowing Association as the largest in the South West and the monthly figures are going from strength to strength
The next stage is to get the rowers out into the local community. In September the first phase of this will be that the partnership will use the local Primary schools as centres, to run clubs with the help of coaches and trained teachers.
In May, Treviglas College held the first Newquay Primary Schools’ rowing competition when St. Columb Major Primary School won the team event. Part of the original grant has been used to fund training courses, run by trainers from Concept2 to ensure that teachers, community leaders and young people are trained as indoor rowing instructors so that they can pass on their knowledge in satellite clubs based in the local primary schools.
Athletics
The county athletics championships were held at Par athletics stadium on June 21st 2008. Treviglas entered strong teams from Year 7 and 8 and many of our students were highly placed. Final results can be found on the PE notice board. Two of our students achieved county champion status, they are Connor Woof and George Starkey both for the discus. One of the most exciting events of the day was Jareth Scott running the 1500m. He put in a brave performance and led the field throughout the race, only to be pipped at the post in the last few meters, finishing in second position. Well done to all the students who were selected to represent Treviglas at this prestigious event, we look forward to an even more successful season next year.

The dome provides a large indoor sports area for a range of activities. It contains a five a side football pitch, 2 netball courts, 8 badminton courts and 2 tennis courts. It is a multiple uses which allows a variety of sporting event sto be held in it.
