Supporting my child through GCSE's
Years 10 and 11 (or Key Stage 4) are some of the most challenging for any teenager. We work hard at Treviglas in order to support our students through this daunting time. First of all Year 10 students are mentored by their tutors during form time; to ensure coursework deadlines are met and that students settle well into their GCSE courses.
In Year 11 this level of support is increased further. Each Year 11 student is assigned an experienced teacher to act as their mentor; with whom they meet every week for an hour in a small group, and one to one. Within these sessions we deliver a specially tailored curriculum aimed at trouble shooting problem areas such as revision, exam technique, coursework, literacy for success, and much more.
However, we are keen to recognise that you as parents have a crucial role to play. In fact the TES reported in 2003 that “Parental support is eight times more important in determining a child’s academic success than social class, according to a new study. The Campaign for Learning found that parental involvement in a child’s education can mean the difference between an A* and an ‘also-ran’ at GCSE.”
However, we appreciate that this is a daunting task as schools have transformed massively since we attended. Therefore in the resources section of this mini site you will find a wealth of no nonsense information, and tips, which will help you, help your children.
If you require any further advice or support please do not hesitate to contact your child’s tutor or mentor.
