Curriculum Development FAQs
Why are we moving from 60 minute lessons to 100 minute sessions?
Evidence shows that 100 minutes is the optimum learning time for a session giving teachers an increased opportunity to develop the learning skills that our students will need to equip themselves for the 21st Century. The extended sessions allows for:
- Increased learning time
- Development of project and skills based learning
- Deepening and embedding of Enterprise Learning
- Broadening of student experience within collaborative projects
- Further development of independent study skills
How will a 100 minute lesson feel for the student?
There will be more exciting opportunities to extend and enrich learning. The longer sessions will allow teachers to collaboratively plan and deliver experiences which are personalised for the students in front of them. Professional Development by the staff throughout this year has been related to Deep Learning and Enterprise skills supporting the sharing of good practice within the staff in the delivery of actively engaging rich sessions.
Why will my son/daughter be leaving college at 4.15pm or 4.30pm?
Currently all students from Years 7 and 9 and many from Years 10, 11, 12 and 13 have timetabled lessons running from 3pm to 4pm. A significant number of students are also engaged in eXtra@Treviglas opportunities which run until 5pm. The flexibility offered from incorporating a teaching session 4 on Monday to Thursday will extend these outstanding curriculum opportunities to all students.
Why is my son/daughter finishing at 12.30pm on a Friday?
Treviglas College fully believes that the continued professional development of its learning community is the key to maintaining and developing 'Outstanding'. One of the challenges faced is to meet as a staff within a college that provides such a well attended extended curriculum. The new timetable structure allows all teachers to follow the professional development programme available to members of staff within the college. This is seen as a great opportunity for your son/daughter to be involved in Duke of Edinburgh, sporting or other extended opportunities without missing crucial curriculum time.
We will also be able offer approved groups the use of college facilities to hold sports activities, family learning classes etc. With the building of the new Sports Hub on the Treviglas site next year, this can be seen as a wonderful opportunity.
