Y9 Motivational Language Events
Article Created on Friday, 20 January 2012
Over the past couple of months a series of events aimed at making Year 9 students aware of the importance of having a language qualification have taken place at Treviglas. In December 2011, around 70 Year 9 students listened to Louisa Scoffham, Head of Wine Sales at St Austell Brewery, talk about the how her study of languages had helped her succeed in her personal and professional life. Student Lauren Wray said:
'The first lady was interesting because she was English and yet she studied languages and now she can really benefit from them in everyday life which I think the students can relate to' which was very much a shared opinion.
This event was followed by an MFL day on Wednesday 18th January. During Session 1 Marie-Marthe Gervais, from the University of Plymouth, gave an hour long presentation in which she highlighted the importance of having a GCSE in a language. Stories of successful students, video clips of celebrities talking about how a language has helped them and information on the E-Bacc all gave students a lot of food for thought and triggered many interesting discussions. In Session 2 maths, students looked at percentages and salary increases in various careers if you had a qualification in MFL whilst in session 3 they took on the role of journalists and created front pages of newspapers in order to present all the information they had received and researched thus putting their ICT skills to good use. Overall, the series has given Year 9 much to think about in the run up to Key Stage 4.
