Students Get Schooled in Web Design

Students at Treviglas Community College got the chance to hone their web design skills with industry professionals last week at an intensive all-day web academy.
Held in one of the college’s ICT rooms, the workshop was co-organised by Treviglas ICT staff and the Cornwall Learning Education Business Partnership (EBP)–a division of Cornwall County Council which offers specialist educational support in enterprise and business subjects.
Treviglas students from Year 12 and 13 spent the day working with reps from Redruth based company, Redfuse Internet, to produce web-based projects designed to beef up their design skills.
Students were tasked with creating webpage templates from scratch as well as taking in-depth looks at what makes other web pages effective. The day not only helped students develop skills for their coursework, but also gave useful insight into the tech industry and business world.
“It was an eye-opening day,” said Alistair McKenna, Year 13. “It was encouraging because I learned that almost all businesses use web design to promote themselves. These are skills that I can use whatever I decide to do.”
Several students also remarked on how surprisingly simple they found web design to actually be.
“At first it all looked really hard, just code and data, but then you break it all down and it’s actually quite simple,” added Matt Millar, also Year 13. “I’m looking forward to doing more.”
The web academy was designed with the aim of nurturing talent and providing students with practical web-based experience.
