'Get Set' Teaches Students Olympic Business

Winning students collect their prize.

Students at Treviglas Community College in Newquay took on the role of prospective Olympic hosts last week at an informative "Olympics Enterprise" day.

Organised by the Get Set London Olympic Network, students in Year 7 and 8 were given the chance to learn the ins and outs of hosting a pre-games Olympic training camp.

The students were divided up into teams and tasked with the challenge of designing and delivering a pitch for their very own training camp–mimicking the actual process the real-life Olympic committee carries out in order to secure training camps for athletes.

To begin with, each team was assigned a country and a specific sports team to host. From there, the pint-sized would-be entrepreneurs had to consider real world business factors such as expenditures and marketing in order to come up with a winning bid.

The day called for students to work together to set up a company, complete with a logo, and then choose a suitable training facility within the UK. After that, teams had to present their proposals to a committee in an attempt to win their sports team’s business.

Throughout the process, students were required to not only meet several business criteria but also demonstrate that their company represented the core Olympic and Paralympic values: respect, excellence and friendship.

In the end, Treviglas Year 8 students Keziah Bunyan, Mel Whitehead Smith, Jody Audley, Emily King, Sophie Howard and Rhianna Horton won over the committee with their bid to host the South African Track and Field team at a training facility in Liverpool.

"It was a fantastic learning day for all of the students," said PE Teacher Molly Leverton, who helped organise the event. "The types of skills they developed, such as thinking as a team and creating strategies, are things that can be applied to both school-based and real-life situations. They certainly got a lot out of the day and had fun too."
