Sports and Outdoor Pursuits
While an academic and/or vocational education is the prime purpose of what we do at Treviglas, we also concern ourselves with the wider issues of welfare, fitness, health and personal growth of students. This is all part of ensuring that the whole person is developed and that, for those whose abilities lie in more practical and physical directions, the college can offer the same excellence of opportunity as for those whose aptitudes lie along more academic lines. Of course, most students will have a mix of skills and abilities that cover academic, practical and physical areas and it is important that their learning maintains a healthy balance between the different aspects of their lives. Students will do better in all aspects of their college life if they are physically healthy and intellectually stimulated by a range of experiences.
Sport
With our extensive grounds and state-of-the-art sports dome, Treviglas is well equipped to offer coaching and playing opportunities in most major sports.
In the winter, our team sports include football, netball, rugby, hockey and basketball with practice matches after college. The main summer activities include cricket, tennis, rounders and athletics with, once again, after college practices and matches. Gymnastics and table tennis are among our all year round activities. There are also fitness clubs available to all teams and individuals.
Reflecting the large rural community served by the college, Treviglas also offers equestrian sports in the shape of the college show jumping team.
For all sports, our teams compete in local competitions and championships and our pupils often become active and successful members of local, county and national teams.
Outdoor Pursuits
As well as in the field of sports, students are encouraged to participate in a number of clubs and outdoor pursuits, from animal club to activities week and taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh (DoE) Award Scheme. Any student over the age of 14 can enrol on the DoE programme to plan and undertake expeditions and other activities towards each of the three available levels. These types of activities develop qualities of team working and leadership with students learning both that others may rely on them, while they must trust that others will do their part in achieving group objectives. This all adds value to students' ability to get the best out of the college and later to fit comfortably into the wider world.
Knowledge learned in a different environment often makes a more lasting impression than information read in books or taught in the classroom. Treviglas students enjoy many opportunities to study their chosen subjects during visits to places of relevance. This may range from theatre trips, concerts and museum visits, where subjects studied in class are brought vividly to life, to geography field trips, where places studied can be observed at first hand, language exchanges and trips to encourage understanding of the cultural and social contexts of that community and its language.
