Prospectus: About Us

Everyone plays his or her part at Treviglas Community College. There is a friendly atmosphere and a good working relationship between students and staff.

Our College

From our extensive campus on the eastern outskirts of Newquay we serve a large rural and coastal catchment area. Although the college dates from the early 1960s, it has been constantly improved and extended. For instance, the library and the ICT and Science facilities are all recent improvements, as is the enclosed, heated sports dome, the size of two football pitches. We are proud of our superb facilities in a well maintained and secure environment where the students' full potential can be realised.

Admissions Policy

Transfer at 11+
Most students who are admitted to Treviglas Community College transfer to us from our local partner primary schools which are:
Cubert Junior & Infant;
Goonhavern Junior & Infant;
Indian Queens Junior & Infant;
Mawgan-in-Pydar Junior & Infant;
Newlyn East Church of England Junior & Infant;
Newquay Junior;
Perranporth Junior & Infant;
St Columb Major Junior & Infant;
St Columb Minor Junior & Infant;
St Wenn Junior & Infant
Summercourt Junior & Infant;
The Bishops Church of England Junior & Infant;
Trevisker Junior & Infant.

There is an open enrolment scheme for children who live in this area and parents may elect to send their son/daughter to either Treviglas Community College or the other school in this area. Parents who live in this designated area, but who send their son/daughter to a primary school other than those listed above, are also entitled to apply for a place at Treviglas.

The Published Admission Number (PAN) for the college is 205 and we can, therefore, accept up to 205 in years 7-11. If more than 205 pupils apply for places in a given year-group, the LA will allocate places on the basis of their agreed priority system, a copy of which can be obtained from the Education Department at County Hall.

Children settle with the minimum of fuss, due in no small part to the friendly ethos and a close liaison between staff in local primary and secondary schools/colleges. The main purpose of that liaison work is to make a smooth transfer possible for all children at age 11, ensuring maximum continuity and building confidence in all those making the move from Year 6 to Year 7. Headteachers and teachers responsible for transfer meet regularly and visit each other’s schools to support effective transfer.

Keeping up Appearances

As an outward expression of the stable, structured working environment at Treviglas and to avoid 'fashion' pressure on students, we have a simple, reasonably priced uniform, which is worn all year. Clear standards and rules have been established. Jewellery (with limited exceptions) is not allowed on health and safety grounds. Make up and inappropriate hairstyles and colours are not allowed. The bringing of valuable items into college is discouraged. The college has no insurance to cover the loss of those items which pupils bring into college.

Getting here

Students who live more than three miles from the college, but within our designated area, are entitled to free transport, either on a dedicated contract service or on public transport. Parents may request that students cycle to college although we cannot be responsible for the safety of bicycles during the day. Senior students may be able to bring cars or motorcycles to college with the permission of the Headteacher or Deputy.

The College Day

Students are expected to attend throughout the whole college day. Any absence, including family holidays, late arrival, early departure or time out of college (including going home for lunch) will need a written application from a parent to the Year Tutor.

A Community of Mutual Respect

For a community such as ours to succeed, everybody must respect certain rules and standards of behaviour to ensure that:

students have the right to learn;
teachers have the right to teach;
we all have the right to be safe.

We reward self discipline and respect for others, offering praise when earned, but we admonish and administer sanction for inappropriate or inconsiderate behaviour. This disciplined approach applies to health and safety, attendance, punctuality, care of books and equipment, behaviour in college and during journeys to and from college.

Our wider community

On many occasions during the year, parents are invited to share activities, view their children's achievements and discuss their progress.

Pastoral care

We consider students' general well being in addition to their educational needs. Whether it is a matter of financial or other difficulties at home, health problems, personal difficulties or concerns about work and college, a confidential, helpful and constructive approach, sometimes with practical help, will prevent a worry or minor difficulty from becoming a handicap to progress.
