Cornish Schools Surf Championships

Press release

Once again the Animal Cornish Schools’ Surfing Championships, organised by students from the surfacademy@treviglas was blessed with absolutely cooking surf on the Saturday and smaller but clean contestable conditions on the Sunday. The standard of surfing by all contestants was even higher than last year, probably due to everyone raising their game since they were rubbing shoulders with some of Europe's top surfers in the Animal British Cup.

The body board final featured uber-talent Luke Dillon trying his luck on a sponge, up against seasoned 'shark biscuits' C-Mase, Luke Benney and Ben Thomson. Thomson won a tight final with some very stylish 360's on critical sections of the wave, with Benny taking second and Dillon in third place. The girls’ category had British team surfer and also student of the surfacademy@treviglas college, Holly Donnelly, showing her international credentials with some fluid surfing ahead of Gabby Rowe in second, Tassie Swallows in third, Tamsin Dillon in fourth and Anne Stevens taking fifth. In the under 14 final the boys raised their game with some critical, precise surfing in low tide Fistral. Harry Timson took first with a long right-hander that he bashed to the beach, ahead of P Dumel in second and Ryan Roberts in third. The showcase of the event was the under 16 boys’ final. After a controversial semi-final decision that had the beach up in arms, Josh Piper retained his cool to take first place and become the deserved Cornish Schools’ Surfing Champion, thanks to his consistently high standard of surfing throughout the event. His school retained the team trophy and in this commentator’s mind, the team was a strong selection of surfing talent.

Ellis Attwell, surfacademy@treviglas Event Director and Surf Academy Tutor from Treviglas, said, 'Yet again a successful competition has been organised in its entirety thanks to the hard work of Treviglas Surf Academy students and the generosity of our sponsors, Animal and Ginster's, who provided prizes and refreshments. The students were stoked to have set up such a large event from scratch. Thanks also to the goodwill of the judges who gave up their weekends to help out. If anyone wants to join us in the sixth form next year, to surf and study then graduate to a great career,  check out www.surfacademy.org.uk for details.'
