Outstanding Exam Results

AN OUTSTANDING 94% GAIN 5 OR MORE A*-C GCSE GRADES IN 2009

Treviglas College’s 16-year-olds are celebrating after achieving another massive leap in GCSE results.

Once again the College has hugely exceeded the national average for the percentage of students gaining at least five top A*-C grades in any subject and has also exceeded the national benchmark figure for students achieving 5+ A*-C grades, including English and Maths.

Treviglas celebrated mightily last year when it topped the county table with an outstanding 83% but this has been yet another outstanding year for Treviglas and the class of 2009 has leapt ahead to gain a record high of 94% 5+ A*-C grades. The national average for 2008 was just 65.3%

The proportion of Treviglas students achieving five A*-Cs, including English and Maths, also rose this year. In 2008, Treviglas smashed the national average figure of 47.6 per cent and this year the number of students gaining that all-important benchmark has risen again.

Headtacher, Helen Mathieson, said: “I’d like to offer my warmest congratulations to the students, their parents and of course our staff. These results are true testament to what is possible through hard work, skill and determination, but above all, from instilling into our whole college community a sense of real self-confidence, self-determination and excellence. We are so very proud of them all.”

Mrs Mathieson went on: “GCSEs are so important; they are the foundation for our students’ future prospects as well as for both further and higher education. The governors are delighted with the on-going success of the college and its students.”

Treviglas College had so many real high fliers this year who all deserved their excellent results, many of them achieving A* and A grades in all of their subjects but special mention must go to the fantastic Maths, English and Science results which truly reflect the excellent teaching at the college. Special mention must also be made of Kane Smith, a Year 9 student at Treviglas who has benefited from personal tutoring within the Maths faculty and who achieved an A* grade in Maths this year. He has already begun to study for his A level in Maths and will be entered for the examination at the end of Year 10. We were also extremely pleased with the Sport results where students achieved a record crop of A* and A grades.

In spring of 2009, Ofsted paid tribute to the hugely diverse and imaginative curriculum at Treviglas which leads to excellent outcomes for all. Inpsectors also made special mention of the ‘outstanding’ leadership and management of the college as a whole and the concentration on personal tutoring and mentoring, allowing all students to succeed.

Mrs Mathieson concluded; “With results like these at both GCSE and A-level, Treviglas can be seen not only as an excellent example of comprehensive education but also as a real alternative to independent education.”

Treviglas College is the only 11-18 secondary school in Cornwall to have been graded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted.
