The Modern Foreign Languages Faculty comprises a team of enthusiastic and well-qualified teachers, including four full time and two part time teachers, as well as French and German assistants. For the last two years the faculty has been lead Department for the implementation of the KS3 strategy within the College.
All pupils study either French or German in Year 7 and they continue with this language throughout Key Stages 3 & 4, with all students sitting the GCSE examination. Pupils are taught in sets from Year 8. From Year 8, pupils currently have the option of studying their second Foreign Language (French or German) in twilight sessions, and they can also sit the GCSE examination.
At Key Stages 3 & 4 our schemes of work are based on the National Curriculum course books ‘Fusee’ and ‘Klasse’. At Key Stage 5 we use the new textbooks ‘Elan and Zeitgeist’. A variety of up-to-date materials, including many from newspapers, magazines and the Internet are used as well as many other textbooks including Zenith, Objectif-Bac and Schauplatz.
All pupils complete half-termly assessments in order to monitor progress and raise standards. The results are fed into the whole school assessment system and are used to adjust teaching groups and to inform discussions with pupils and parents.
We offer French and German at AS and A2 level. In Year 12 students are encouraged to apply for a place on the Primary School Work Experience Scheme in Brittany. Many of our Year 12 students also complete work experience in Aurich, North Germany, where we have links with a partner school. In January we attend the annual conference on Europe in Paris; this trip is open to all sixth form students.
Within the Faculty we enjoy a positive, cheerful and productive working environment. We realise the importance of high expectations, careful organisation, flexibility and the liberal sharing of ideas and resources. We work well as a team, enjoy open communication and a supportive atmosphere. We strive to provide an environment where all students can fulfil their potential.
